Babar, Shan build inning before bad weather abandoned Day 1

Manchester: Babar Azam and Shan Masood acclimatized well as Pakistan closed day 1 at 139-2 despite losing two early wickets in the opening Test against England at Old Trafford.

The right-left hand combination built up a strong partnership of 96 before bad light abandoned the play just after the rain stopped.

After deciding to bat first, Pakistan were off to a shaky start with both openers Shan and Abid Ali giving respect to the new ball. The duo managed to get 29 runs on the scoreboard in 10 overs. In 16th over, Jofra Archer completely deceived Abid who walked off after scoring 16.

Azhar Ali saw yet another failure as the skipper departed for naught, sending Babar in to join Shan at the crease.

Babar suffered counter strikes from England’s bowler but he survived and reached his 14th Test fifty in 41st over. He remained not out for 69 off 100 balls and struck 11 boundaries during his stay at the crease.

Meanwhile, Shan survived twice behind the stumps as Jos Buttler dropped a catch and a stumping chance to give two lifelines to the left-handed batter. He walked off being not out at 46 off 152 with seven boundaries in his account.

England’s bowling wasn’t up to the mark, however, Chris Woakes and Jofra Archer managed to bag a wicket each.
